Everything You Need to Know About Cufflinks and Studs

There are certain accessories that every well-dressed man needs to have. You need a great wallet or money clip, a couple of watches, a few fashionable belts, and some tie clips to choose from. The other things you need to be able to dress up and look sophisticated and stylish are cufflinks and studs. Wearing a cufflink and stud set will take your formal attire to the next level and take your whole look from Average Joe to James Bond. Here is everything you need to know about cufflinks and studs.

What are cufflinks and studs?
Cufflinks, or a cufflink button set, are used to replace the buttons on the cuff of a dress shirt sleeve. Studs, which are often also called tuxedo buttons or tux studs, are worn as buttons in the front of a dress shirt. Both these accessories are used to replace regular shirt buttons for a classier look and more color and style choice. You can find overnight from a mother of pearl cufflink to gold cufflinks to skull cufflinks. The same is true with dress shirt studs.

The history of cufflinks and studs
Cufflinks and studs have been around basically since the advent of shirts with buttons. In the early 1700s, during the reign of King Louis XIV, cufflinks and studs started to become more decorative and much fancier. They were a way for aristocrats to show off their wealth and style. The regular use of cufflinks and studs though really took off in the eagerly to mid-1800s. It was during this time, when button-down shirts became the norm for almost any public occasion, that these types of formal jewelry items really took off. Today, while they are most associated with men’s tuxedos and the tuxedo shirt, cufflinks and studs are worn by many men who want to add an element of class and style to their tux or suit.

How to use cufflinks and studs
Cufflinks have three main parts. The face, which is the part that looks like a button, the post which extends out from the face, and the toggle, which moves and locks the cufflink in place. To use it you turn the toggle up so it is parallel with the post then slide it through the slits on either side of your cuff. Once it is through and the face is facing out, you turn the toggle so it is perpendicular to the post to lock it in place.

On a formal shirt, there will be a slit above each button. To use shirt studs, you slip them through, face first, from the inside of the shirt. After that, you use them exactly like you would a button and fasten them through the slits on the opposite side of your shirt.

The function of using cufflinks and studs
The functional aspect of cufflinks and studs is obvious. They work to hold your shirt and your cuffs closed. The real function through is aesthetic. These accessories are all about achieving the exact look you want when you put on formal wear. You can go classic and understated or audacious and bold. Whatever your style and whatever look you are going for, cufflinks and studs will help you make it work.

Who uses cufflinks and studs?
Now and throughout history, cufflinks and shirt studs have mostly been a fashion item for men. However, as the popularity of suits and other traditionally masculine outfits become more popular with women, they do wear cufflinks and studs at times too.

But, as for the type or demographic of men who wear cufflinks and studs, that really varies quite a bit. That is one of the best things about cufflinks and studs. Whether you are young or old, rich or less well-off, or whether you wear a suit every day or just on very special occasions, pairing your formalwear with the right cufflinks and studs will make you look fantastic and people will take notice.
